WED: RSG Moves To Check Tidal Erosion

The Rivers State Government says, it will reach out to international oil companies and other agencies in the state to find solution to the problem of tidal erosion in the state.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli said this in an interactive session with newsmen as part of activities to mark this year’s World Environment Day (WED) celebration in the state.
Dr. Weli said that the state government was conducting a study on the impact of gas flaring over the years in the state, regretting that past governments in the state have paid lipservice to the issue.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli has said that the solution to climate change lies on tree planting and conservation of natural resources.
Speaking at a tree planting exercise in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the World Environmental Day celebration, the Commissioner said that the theme of this year’s celebration which is: “small islands developing states” is apt in view of the devastating effect of climate change, particularly tidal erosion on the state.
He said that there was need to compensate nature through the planting of trees.
According to him, trees will help to check erosion and flooding in the state, stressing that the government will continue to sensitise the people on the importance of tree planting.
Also speaking, the representative of Shell Petroleum development Company Limited (SPDC), Mr. Edison Akponuere, said that the company was partnering with the government to improve the wellbeing of the environment.
Akponuere particularly said that the company was working in the area of mangrove revegetation, amongst others.
On his part the Acting State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Oliver Wolugbo condemned the construction of buildings on water right of way, and called for a change of attitude.
