About three water
tanks constructed by various government agencies in Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have been destroyed by rainstorm.
Conducting a team of officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) and newsmen round the community, some residents of the area said that the situation had made the community to depend on dugout wells for their source of drinking water.
They said that the situation might lead to the spread of water borne diseases in the area if there is no urgent intervention from the relevant authorities.
The residents also told newsmen that the community had been thrown into darkness as a number of electric poles were affected, while cassava and plantain stems were uprooted by the storm.
Speaking with newsmen, the chairman Community Development Committee (CDC) Ubima, Sir. Kings .A. Elems described the incident as the worst in the area.
Sir. Elems said that apart from the heavy losses interms of properties the storm also affected the entire environment of Ubima.
He said that the community was in need of both government and private sectors’ attention as many people affected by the incident have no where to go to.
Also speaking, Mr ThankGod Iheanyichukwu said that it was the first time the community is witnessing such a disaster noting that most of the victims survived by the grace of God.
He called on the government to come to the aide of the community by donating relief materials to those that lost their properties to the incident.
