The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission has tasked staff of the 23 local government councils to develop work ethics that will guide them to improve service delivery in the councils.
The Chairman of the commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini, said this while declaring opened a two-day seminar on, “Understanding the Dynamics of the Policy Issues on Computation of Retirement Benefit for Officers in the Local Government”, organised by the commission in Port Harcourt.
Nmerukini said that the commission was poised to ensure quality service delivery, adding that this can only be achieved when staff change their attitude to work.
The commission chairman further warned against falsification of service records, stressing that this situation has led to series of litigations between the commission and some staff who falsified their records to prolong their stay in the service.
Nmerukini, who commended the participants for their mass attendance at the seminar, promised that more training would be organised by the commission to update their knowledge and skills in the service.
In his lecture entitled, “Understanding the Basic Principles of Pension Regulations in Local Government Administration”, Sir Cletus M. Idu, said that to eliminate delay in pension payments, steps should be taken to set up good personnel records in the various ministries.
Idu also stressed the need for retiring officers to tender all documents relating to their service for scrutiny six months before retirement, while ministries/extra-ministerial departments which fall under the Establishment Bureau should always forward employment particulars of their serving officers to the bureau before their officers retire.
