FG To End Open Defecation

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, says Nigeria is determined to eliminate open defecation by 2025, as well as achieve 100 per cent access to rural water supply and improved sanitation by 2030.
The Minister who said this in Abuja, also said the water sector road map of the present  administration is aimed at improving the consciousness of urban dwellers on water supply, with a view to improving the quality of life and national economy.
A copy of the Minister’s address which was made available to The Tide through the media unit of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NUBDA), said the government is collaborating with some partners such as, USAID and ADB for pilot projects in some states on urban sanitation and waste water management.
“The World Bank’s City wide inclusive sanitation assessment in some cities in the country are also part of the efforts in developing wastewater management.
The Minister also said Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources is participating in the UN-HABITAT water for African cities programme.
According to him, the programme which took off in 2007, has its main objective the development of an integrated pro-poor water supply and sanitation intervention in selected poor and informal settlements in Jos, Plateau state.
Adamu said, the Administration is on the verge of completing the abandoned Central Ogbia Water Supply scheme in Bayelsa state and the Adda river dam in Enugu state.
