The Rivers State Government on Friday donated 10.34 hectares of land to the federal government for building of low-cost housing units for low and medium income earners in Rivers State.
The housing units, according to the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Anal Pepple is part of President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda to provide affordable and accessible houses for Nigerians
Ms Pepple, who was on inspection of the site at Iriebe, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, noted that the site of the land was strategically located and can be developed within a short period of time.
“This is a very choice property, because it is on the road. It is a developed area, so it will be easy to bring in light, water and infrastructure into the place.
‘The land is solid, there is no swamp, you do not have to refill it,.. So, we will go back and do the I’s and cross the T’s, working with the state government and the state Ministry of Housing,” she said.
On when the development of the property will commence, she hinted that immediately the paper work is concluded in about a week, developers will move to the site, noting that the federal government has a public private partnership unit which liaises with private developers to construct the buildings.
She explained that, “we do not build directly in the Ministry, we use the private sector. In our Ministry, we have a PPP unit. The unit handles the collaboration we have with the private sector.
“Some people (Private Developers) come in , they have their own fund. Others do not have , but in all the cases, they expect us to give them land and then, we pay the compensation where necessary”, she said.
In his speech at the site, the state Commissioner for Housing, Hon Marshal Uwom said the donation of the land was in line with the state governor’s policy to interface between public and private sectors in the state.
“We appreciate the collaborative effort of the Federal Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development, particularly the commitment and drive of the Hon Minister. We commend the personal visit of the Minister and her entourage to the Iriebe satellite town for the purpose of housing development.
“This is a demonstration of the capacity for pro-active partnership between the federal and state governments , he said,
