Five retired permanent Secretaries, four retired directors and 15 senior officers of various ministries have been honour by the Rivers State Civil Service.
The programme was part of the activities marking this year’s civil service week in the state.
The retired permanent secretaries are , Mr Chris C. Obinna, Mr Chukwuneke W. Esukpa, Ignatius Piagbara, Mrs Dennisada Ben Fiabema and Sir Mike Elechi.
The retired directors include Mr S.K Ndi, Mr A.B Amachree, Mr Daso Josiah Koko and Dr Captain Solomon Major.
The serving officers are, Mrs Ruth I Obed, Mr Oba Alali, Mr Osogim Napoleon and Nleenee Birawa.
Also honoured were Mr Sunday Peter Okwagwu, A Ben Berepiki, Patricia Minima, Jack Barthwell Fubara, Mrs Ngozi Azubuike and Mrs Patience Ogolo.
The rest were Mr Enoch S.M Epelle, Mr S.N Offor, Mrs Helen Jack, Mr Vincent Nactor amd Mrs Chinedum Joel.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government has said that it will continue to work with civil servants to ensure the realisation of set goals.
The state Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who said this while declaring open this year’s civil service week described the service as an inseperable part of government. The governor , who was represented by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Wogu Boms, said that there cannot be an efficient government without an efficient civil service, stressing that government will continue to support the service to enable it attain the desired goals.
In his lecture titled, between politics and administrative directives the public servants’ dilemma, a retired permanent Secretary, Eze Godwin Iroanwusi decried the high rate of corruption among public servants.
Eze Iroanwusi, who called for constant review of the dynamics and process of the service, also urged civil servants to always adjust to administrative directives.
He also urged the permanent secretaries to cultivate the habit of boldness while advising political leaders, saying that training and retraining programmes should be vigorously pursed in the service.
Also speaking on the topic, Public “Service and the Age of open governance – giving voice to the citizens, the Vice Chancellor, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Professor Barineme Beekee Fakae, said that civil servants must be conversant with modern trend in the media to contribute to governance.
Prof Fakae, who was represented by Dr Isaac Zeb-Obipi, said that apart from the conventional media, the social media has become a veritable tool in information dissemination.
High point of the event was the presentation of codified public policy circulars of Rivers State (1969-2013).
