Plans have reached an advanced stage for the construction of a clay manufacturing industry in Egi in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The industry is being undertaken by the Rivers State Government in partnership with Total Exploration and Production Limited.
This was the outcome at a meeting between the state government represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Investment, Mr Isaac Okemni, the management of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), representatives of total E&P and foreign technical partners in Port Harcourt.
Briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting, the Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), Mr Larry Pepple, said that the plan for the proposed industry which started three years ago, was hatched by Total E&P in partnership with Rivers State Government for sustainable development.
Pepple also said that the proposed industry was part of the programme of the present administration to ensure sustainable development not only for Egi, but for the entire state.
He noted that the availability of raw materials aids the creation of an industrial park in Egi city. This has made the area accessible for the pilot scheme of the industry, and announced plans by the joint venture to embark on a road show in the next couple of weeks.
According to him, the industry which was environmental friendly will lead to the production of cements using clay and therefore employs more than 300 qualified job seekers.
Earlier, the Sustainable Development and Enterprise Development Manager, Total Exploration and Production, Philippe Desriac had said that the company has strong partnership with the RSSDA to establish the industry with a view to using clay to build houses.
