The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Rivers State branch, has declared its readiness to combat crime in the state.
The Acting Surveyor-General of Rivers State, Surveyor Elenwo Noel, who said this during a courtesy call by members of the institution to the Rivers State former Police Commissioner, Mr. Chris Ezike in his office said that the surveyors have the requisite tools and skills to provide the necessary data and mapping information in achieving the needed security in the state.
“We know that a peaceful aid safe environment is very necessary for socio political and economic development of the state, which is the cardinal objective of the present administration of Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike.
“As a test case, we hereby present to you a base map of the Port Harcourt and its environs, showing at a glance street guide, location of some Police stations and adjoining neighbourhoods for ease of location of places, positions and accessibility to such in the case of emergency and distress cults” he said.
According to him, the Surveyors imput in the activities of the Nigeria Police Force in policing and security will be highly enhanced by a healthy collaboration and co-operation between the force and the surveying community, adding that the map provided is one of the end products of the Surveyor which will help the command takes decisions on operational planning.
Responding, the former state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezeike described the visit as very strategic as it will help to drive further the vision of the command in crime fighting and control.
Mr. Ezeike who thanked the institution for the base map further said that crime fighting requires mapping and geological study and disclosed plan by the Command to inaugurate a committee to interface with the office of the Surveyor General with the view to explore areas of mutual cooperation.
The Police Commissioner also stressed the need for more community engagements with the Police to check crime in the state.
