About 80 Rivers youths are currently being sponsored by the State government for a three months intensive training programme in Aluminum Steel Works and production of interlocking stones.
The training, which is under the Business/Talent Support Programme of the state government, will enable the trainees to acquire the necessary skills for self employment.
The State Commissioner for Youth development, Sir. Owene Wonodi, who flagged off the programme in his office in Port Harcourt last Friday, said that the scheme was in line with Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s effort to create the necessary environment for investment in the State.
Wonodi said that the programme, which cuts across the 23 local government areas, will reduce the rate of unemployment, thereby checking restiveness among the youth.
He stressed the need for the beneficiaries to see it as an avenue to move out of the unemployment market, stressing that their successes will create opportunities for others to also benefit.
According to him, the state government is desirous of ensuring that Rivers youth both graduates and non-graduates, who are willing to go into vocational education and training are given full support.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner has described as painful the current level of thuggery and political violence in the state.
He warned those involved to desist in their own interest and that of the society as their blood was not worth any politician’s office.
Wonodi also urged them to vote for credible candidates during the forth coming elections.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Clara Tams Nmebe, urged the trainees to take the programme seriously so as to improve their conditions and that of their families.
One of the trainees, Mr. Ernest Abbey told newsmen later that the programme would help them to acquire the necessary skills for the improvement of the society.
