Obele Foundation has announced an annual undergraduate scholarship award for five indigent students of Agbonchia and two others for skills acquisition programme.
Chairman of the Foundation, Dr. Princewill Olungeonwi Obele who disclosed this during the inaugural meeting in Port Harcourt, said that the areas of focus were Medicine, Law, Engineering, Accountancy and Economics, adding that the Foundation would encourage skills such as, welding and pipe fitting.
Obele further explained that out of the seven slots for the scholarship award, three would be reserved for indigent female students of the community.
He described his late father, Chief Sir John Okparaji Obele, who died five years ago, as a man with strong passion for education, stressing that the Foundation was a continuation of his pursuit for the educational development of Agbonchia, the entire Eleme and Rivers State at large.
Also speaking, Secretary of the Foundation, Mrs Onene Osila Obele Oshoko, said that her father during his life-time was at the forefront of the girl child education campaign in the area, noting that this was why, the foundation has allocated three out of five of the undergraduate scholarship to females.
Mrs Oshoko who is the Chairman of the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) said that the situation would help the Agbonchia Community in Eleme Local Government Area to catch up with other communities in the area, in educational development, while poverty would be reduced.
