The Controller of Prison, Rivers state Mr. Patrick Ondoma has said an attempt to smuggle an AK47 Rifle into the Port Harcourt Prison last month was foiled by the prison authorities.
Ondoma who disclosed this yesterday in Port Harcourt at the 14th Roundtable discussion on Security Awareness and Environmental Sustainability organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Rivers State, said that two suspected Boko Haram members arrested by the Authority were also handed over to the State Security Service.
He said that the plan to smuggle the arms was hatched by a condemned prisoner, stressing that in a swift reaction, the over 250 condemned prisoners then, the Port Harcourt prison were distributed across prisons in the country.
The Controller who spoke on life and existence of a prison in a nation, described prison as an abode of the under world.
He argued that not all Boko Haram members were Nigerians and urged concerted effort by all to stop the evil in the country.
Also speaking, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police Mr. Dan Bature said that Nigeria was passing through a challenging time in her history.
‘The truth is that our country, Nigerian, is passing through a challenging and trying time at the moment challenging times in terms of security, economic affairs, political succession and even environmental upheaval especially in this part of the country”, he said.
The Commissioner who was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alkali Shaba further said that the advent of terrorism in the North Eastern part of the country, was a dangerous dimension to the hitherto security architecture which has forced Nigerians to a new life-style that is alien to their customs and traditions.
“This is the crux of the matter. As responsible citizens of this great country, security awareness has become part of our civic education and I want to suggest that security education should be incorporated into our education curriculum from primary school to University level”, the CP said.
Earlier, the State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Oliver Wollugbom, said that the programme was to enable stakeholders contribute to the challenges facing the nation.
