A Professor of
Criminology in Rivers State, Professor Enoch Onyeche, has called on security agencies to be proactive in combating crime in the state.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Professor Onyeche also attributed the recent crisis in Etche which led to loss of lives and properties on the activities of some disgruntled politicians from the area.
He said that minimising crimes in the state depends on the efforts of the security agencies, pointing out that security agencies must move out to get information on the activities of criminals in all nooks and crannies of the state.
On the situation in Etche, Professor Onyeche who is an indigene of the area said that the sponsors of criminality in Etche land would surely pay for it as nemesis would catch up with them.
He said that it is crude for politicians to resort to thuggery and other acts of violence to intimidate perceived opponents.
According to him, what Etche people need is not violence but development as the area has nothing to show in terms of quality infrastructure noting that even Etche cannot even boost of any quality appointment.
Professor Onyeche said that Etche has remained a rural area in view of its contributions to the economic development of the state and the nation, stressing that this situation is no longer acceptable.
The Professor of Criminology urged Etche politicians to put the interest of the area above personal interest by thinking of those things that would unite the people.
He used the occasion to commend the State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the Etche council chairman, Reginald Ukwuoma, for their quality leadership, urging them not to be distracted as the people of Etche are solely behind them.
