The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt District 9141 has commissioned a four-classroom block and staff room at Oginigba Community Secondary School, Oginigba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
President of the club, Rotarian Adeolu Okanlawon said the commissioning was in furtherance of the club’s passion to serve humanity and fulfil the Rotary International vision of “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and ourselves”.
Rotarian Okanlawom also said the club had intervened in the areas of peace building and conflict resolution, provision of water and sanitation facilities, basic education and literacy, maternal and child health and community development.
He stressed the need for men and women of goodwill to assist the club in the provision of chairs and desks for both students and teachers, educational boards and other teaching accessories.
“It is therefore time again for us to roll sleeves, identify and appeal to men and women of goodwill who will join us to donate treasures, network and talent in making this a reality”, he said.
Also speaking, the District 9141 Rotary International Governor, Rotarian Virginia Major, said the project was one of the club’s focus which is based on adult education.
Major, who was represented by the Assistant District Governor, Rotarian Golden Tamuno, urged the school management to ensure that the facility was properly maintained.
In her welcome address, the principal of Oginigba Community Secondary School (Senior Secondary), Mrs Orlu Charity, said the classroom blocks would ease the problem of congestion in the school.
She, however, said that the school was in dire need of student’s seat, physics, biology, agric science and home management laboratories.
Mrs Orlu also listed other needs of the school to include the extension of the computer laboratory to accommodate more students amongst others.
